Energy prices 'to rise' with carbon floor pricing

Price comparison site uSwitch.com has warned that household energy bills could increase as floor prices are put in place for carbon emissions.

Outlined in the 2011 Budget, the pricing system is due to come into effect from April 2013 and aims "to drive investment in the low-carbon power sector".

It is likely to see minimum charges made to utility firms for their carbon emissions during the generation of the mains electricity supply.

Ann Robinson, director of consumer policy for uSwitch.com, says: "This is just the start, not the end of the story.

"There is a long, multi-billion pound shopping list of investment required to secure our longer-term supply."

She adds that this investment is gathering pace, with no known total amount required to achieve all of the government's ambitions on energy security and carbon reduction.

However, as the energy sector continues to contribute towards the necessary capital, she suggests household bills could ultimately bear the brunt in terms of more costly tariffs.
