Iranian Parliament (Majlis) Speaker Ali Larijani says Tehran is ready to cooperate with the West to create lasting global energy security based on “mutual respect” and “fairness.”
Speaking at an energy conference in the Iranian capital, Tehran, on Monday, Larijani said, “Should Western countries enter oil trade in a manner which benefits both the supplier and the customer, the Islamic republic will help create a lasting energy security.”
Larijani advised Western countries to avoid lobbying against Iran, saying, “The language of sanctions is not effective on the Islamic Republic.”
Iran is the world's fourth largest producer of crude oil and natural gas.
Referring to the recent wave of regime changes in the Arab world he warned that if the West still seeks to set up “puppet” rulers in those countries, such actions will not bring about “sustainable security” for them.
“Western countries should realize that appointing submissive figures in [different] countries will only results in [events similar to] the current revolutions in the region (Middle East and North Africa),” The Parliament speaker pointed out.
In recent months, a wave of revolutions and anti-government uprisings has been sweeping the Arab world.
In January, a revolution in Tunisia ended the 23-year ruling of former President Zine El Abidine Ben Ali.
In February, another Arab revolution led to the ouster of former Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak after three decades of his authoritarian rule.
Other revolutions are erupting in Libya, Yemen and Bahrain, while other anti-government unrests have swept Bahrain, Saudi Arabia, Jordan, Oman, Kuwait and Algeria.
