Fuel and energy focus of Energy review

WASHINGTON, Sept. 28 (UPI) -- The U.S. Department of Energy, in a quadrennial review, said strategies aimed are revamping the fuel and energy sector are key factors in energy security.

The Energy Department said energy security and U.S. market competitiveness could increase with better vehicle efficiency, alternative fuels and the use of electrical vehicles in the light-duty fleet.

Further benefits, the department said, could come from more clean electricity, a modernized energy grid and increased building and industrial efficiency.

John Holdren, director of the White House office of science and technology policy, in a statement, said new energy technology can reduce energy costs and decrease U.S. dependence on foreign oil. Additional benefits, he added, would be seen in U.S. competitiveness in the global marketplace and climate issues.

"Innovation in energy technology is going to be central to solving our energy challenges," he said.

The Energy Department review notes emphasis should focus on the transportation sector, noting one of the greatest challenges is introducing more electric vehicles to the national fleet.

The quadrennial report calls on the department to develop a more integrated approach to its research and development activities.

"With this QTR, we bind together multiple energy technologies with the goal of transforming our energy system," Energy Secretary Steven Chu said in a statement.
