EU emissions data for 2012 to be released early April: Commission

LONDON: The European Commission will release preliminary emissions data for 2012 from firms operating under its emissions trading scheme (ETS) in early April and the exact date should be available in the next two weeks.

The data is usually released on or around April 1 but due to Easter holidays in Europe falling at that time this year, it could be slightly later.

"You can expect the verified emissions data itself in early April," a press officer for the EU climate commissioner told Reuters.

The exact date of publication should be published later in March, probably in the first half of the month, she added.

The data is closely watched by analysts and traders to estimate the balance of supply and demand for emissions permits called EU Allowances, and therefore prices.

"The reporting will be done in the same format as last year - the 80 per cent threshold no longer applies," the press officer said.

Last year the Commission released the data regardless of how many installations filed emissions reports. In previous years it has waited to receive 80 per cent of emissions reports from firms in the ETS. EU emissions fell by more than 2 per cent in 2011, according to final European Commission data released last May.

Jefferies Bache estimated last week that emissions from the EU's industry declined by 0.6 per cent in 2012 to 1.88 billion tonnes, with increased use of coal - which is more polluting but has been cheaper than natural gas - tempering the effects of lower industry output in the recession-hit region.
